What is a performance review and what does it mean for me?

Performance reviews are, at their core, a communication channel between employees and their supervisors. While primarily focused on evaluating employee performance and setting ongoing expectations, performance reviews should also give employees a chance to share their impressions of, and expectations for, their work situation.

Ideally, that communication increases cooperation and understanding between supervisors and employees, thus enhancing both work performance and the work environment. Those enhancements are reflected in better customer service, more engaged employees and improved organizational performance (see attachment for more in‐depth details
on performance reviews).

What is the point of a performance review?
The goal of this project is to better understand the responsibilities of each administrative role within the organization. Understanding responsibilities and requirements among the staff will enable us to
identify a set of performance standards, establish a method of performance evaluation, and create a plan for performance improvement. The ultimate goal is to unify the organizational administration staff, understand individual roles/responsibilities, increase engagement and teamwork, and improve overall departmental performance.
The goal of this project will be to:

  • Review and update staff job descriptions
  • Review Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to establish specific measures of performance
  • Outline current staff positions, responsibilities, and roles to create an organization flow chart
  • Create a method of performance evaluation (talent review) for current staff members
  • Improve performance and continuity in practices across the department
  • Assess training/development needs and outline suggested training materials to be created/implemented
  • Create a list of Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) for use as a recruitment tool for incoming staff

What is the process and what can I expect?

Data collection will be conducted (primarily at the beginning of the project period) in the form of surveys, questionnaires, individual interviews and direct observation.

Who will be involved in this project?
Any one working for the organization in an administrative role will be included in this
performance review.
